About The Ploughshare Poets:

Ryan Stauffer and Vade King are The Ploughshare Poets, a popular duo at the Bottlebrush Gallery known for their boisterous Celtic music, strong harmonies, clever banter, and impromptu parades through the streets of Harmony. Far from being a kitschy pub band, The Poets are masters of the history and cultural importance of Scottish and Irish music. Expert musicians, they play bagpipes, guitar, whistles, drums, and bouzouki. Ryan has played bagpipes for 20 years and makes his own small pipes.

Vade played extensively in England and Scotland and was the lead singer of “Colin’s Way” for 10 years.

Dec 31: Silvester, German New Year’s Celebration in Harmony, 3-6pm

Posted on 04 December 2017 (0)

Founded by Germans 213 years ago, Harmony is gearing up to celebrate 2018’s arrival — on German time — with its annual Silvester on Sunday, Dec. 31. New Year’s Eve is called Silvester in Germany after the ancient feast day that commemorated the 4th century Pope Sylvester I, who died on the last day of 335.

It’s an afternoon of fun and family activities sponsored the Harmony Borough and Harmony Museum, with local business support. Now in its 10th year, Silvester attracts thousands of celebrants to the National Historical Landmark on New Year’s Eve.  Starting with a race at 3pm, the festivities continue through the early evening with food, drink, music on the Square, a Christmas tree toss, a wreath toss for the kids. The town square will be jammed with people from throughout the tri-state area, cheering a ball drop and fireworks to greet the new year at 6 p.m. — midnight in Germany.

The Bottlebrush Gallery will be hosting Facepainting by Christina (facepainting for kids young and old!) and music by Jim and Debbie Tobin, Aliquippa.  This is always a very popular event, and our shop is filled with visitors. If you haven’t seen this event, you’re missing out.  Frohes neues Jahr!

Dec 8: Annual Christmas Concert, The Early Mays

Posted on 04 December 2017 (0)

Join us Friday, December 8 at 7pm for our annual Christmas concert with The Early Mays. $15. BYOB, bring snacks to share. Small venue so reservations are required. Hope to see you!

The Early Mays
are Emily Pinkerton, Ellen Gozion and Rachel Eddy. This is the final show of the year, and there is no better way to end the season with this wonderful trio of musicians. Previously, we had the Early Mays here for a show and this is as succinct a description as I could ever hope for:  “WOW… What an evening… To say that I am truly impressed with the Early Mays would be such an understatement. The musical talents of these women leaves me awestruck! They are each gifted with beautiful voices but when they weave together in harmony it becomes a tapestry whose beauty left me deeply touched…” Casey Deely of Common Threads. http://www.theearlymays.com/

From Charleston, West Virginia, Blue Yonder is a band that takes strands of early country music – swing, honky-tonk, bluegrass and rockabillly – and weaves them together with award-winning original compositions and a contemporary feel.

Blue Yonder features three seasoned musicians, each with distinctive and notable skills: singer and songwriter John Lilly, national guitar champion Robert Shafer, and bassist Will Carter. The band’s debut recording “Bittersweet Road” featuring all original songs reached #2 on the Freeform American Roots Radio charts in late 2013. http://www.blueyonderhonkytonk.com

Tender, poetic and aching with life’s truths, Kim’s songs transport you to her world, where words paint pictures and melodies touch the soul. Richey’s still dreaming up fetching melodies that arc and bend in unexpected ways, and still discovering fresh angles from which to articulate matters of the heart. http://www.kimrichey.com/

May 19: Malcolm Holcombe (North Carolina) House Concert

Malcolm Holcombe has a knack for exploring the depths of the working class life, good and bad. He is a storyteller, and his songs have history. “Papermill Man” in particular captures the gritty banalities of mill work in a vivid, descriptive way: “Smoke blowing up in the air/One room shack/One room school…Sawmill sawdust stuck in your lungs/And your head can’t hear the thunder,” he sings, transporting us to this one-horse town that sucks its people in. Holcombe has always been a classic troubadour, a little rough around the edges, no frills and as authentic as it gets.
