May 19: Malcolm Holcombe (North Carolina) House Concert

Malcolm Holcombe has a knack for exploring the depths of the working class life, good and bad. He is a storyteller, and his songs have history. “Papermill Man” in particular captures the gritty banalities of mill work in a vivid, descriptive way: “Smoke blowing up in the air/One room shack/One room school…Sawmill sawdust stuck in your lungs/And your head can’t hear the thunder,” he sings, transporting us to this one-horse town that sucks its people in. Holcombe has always been a classic troubadour, a little rough around the edges, no frills and as authentic as it gets.

Mixed media artist Laura Stuart has been with the Bottlebrush Gallery since 2009.  She is a mixed media artist originally from Volant, PA, currently living in Pittsburgh where she works as a Team Leader for Blind & Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh.

Laura studied Visual Communications at both The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Westminster College where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts Communications. Later, she attended Carlow University for an Art Education certification. Laura has taught art for a number of years within the school setting and within a variety of therapeutic environments.

Laura’s mother Sophia Bovard, introduced her to sewing, drawing and painting at an early age. Both her grandmothers were very influential as well. “One taught me how to make beads, jewelry and rugs out of recycled bits and pieces, the other taught me an appreciation for spiritual art with an emphasis on Greek Orthodox and Byzantine iconography.” With those early influences, travel, education and an exploratory nature, Laura’s first love became the use of color and spacial relationships of color mixed with pattern. She describes her work as “imperfectly divine with a touch of whimsy.”

House Concert!  Tom Mason (Nashville) with special guest Clint Hoover

Pirate, Songwriter, Guitarist and Storyteller from Nashville…

Tom Mason is an amazing musician, song-writer, and actor. Growing up in the Twin Cities, Mason found an early love for music and theater. Watching his brothers and grandfather play guitar lit the flame early for Mason. He received a banjo at age seven, but by age eleven he was playing guitar in open tunings with a wine bottle neck. Tom practiced everyday and decided early in life that he wanted to be a performer. At this time the acting bug bit him, and he started taking acting classes. Tom has continued to act in plays throughout the country. Vaudeville and old Marx Brothers movies made a huge impression, and he has continued to play the crafts and antics of these performers in his own shows and music.

Friday, April 17, 7pm  $15 admission  RSVP in Advance – Open Seating.  BYOB. Bring snacks to share if you wish.  Call 724.452.0539
