Founded by Germans 213 years ago, Harmony is gearing up to celebrate 2018’s arrival — on German time — with its annual Silvester on Sunday, Dec. 31. New Year’s Eve is called Silvester in Germany after the ancient feast day that commemorated the 4th century Pope Sylvester I, who died on the last day of 335.
It’s an afternoon of fun and family activities sponsored the Harmony Borough and Harmony Museum, with local business support. Now in its 10th year, Silvester attracts thousands of celebrants to the National Historical Landmark on New Year’s Eve. Starting with a race at 3pm, the festivities continue through the early evening with food, drink, music on the Square, a Christmas tree toss, a wreath toss for the kids. The town square will be jammed with people from throughout the tri-state area, cheering a ball drop and fireworks to greet the new year at 6 p.m. — midnight in Germany.
The Bottlebrush Gallery will be hosting Facepainting by Christina (facepainting for kids young and old!) and music by Jim and Debbie Tobin, Aliquippa. This is always a very popular event, and our shop is filled with visitors. If you haven’t seen this event, you’re missing out. Frohes neues Jahr!

The Early Mays are Emily Pinkerton, Ellen Gozion and Rachel Eddy. This is the final show of the year, and there is no better way to end the season with this wonderful trio of musicians. Previously, we had the Early Mays here for a show and this is as succinct a description as I could ever hope for: “WOW… What an evening… To say that I am truly impressed with the Early Mays would be such an understatement. The musical talents of these women leaves me awestruck! The second weekend of every year, Historic Harmony celebrates its German roots and transforms into a German Christmas Market or Weihnachtsmarkt. Attendance is estimated at 5,000 with visitors from around the world coming to our town. All of our shops and restaurants are open and waiting for you! From Charleston, West Virginia, Blue Yonder is a band that takes strands of early country music – swing, honky-tonk, bluegrass and rockabillly – and weaves them together with award-winning original compositions and a contemporary feel.

Our Halloween art show this year is “After Dark: The Lost Stories” by Slippery Rock University alum and Pittsburgh native Dan Sennaway. “After Dark” is part of Harmony’s annual “Sleepy Hollow Festival,” a fall festival held in conjunction with neighboring town Zelienople. Please visit the Gallery and experience Dan’s digital illustrations and stories of abandoned buildings and places from his past. Fantastic!
We are proud to host two exhibits this October. The first is “Book-Not-Book,” an exhibition of unique and handmade books created by students in the Fiber Art Studios at Slippery Rock University and Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland. The collaboration between these studios has spanned 4 years, initiated by Barbara Westman, Associate Professor of Art at SRU. Every year, students from both schools work on the same assignment and, later, both collections of artworks are presented in an exhibition in Poland and in the US. It is a unique opportunity for the students involved and for the community to see how the same assignment can be interpreted by students from different countries and cultures. The exhibit will be on display from October 6-October 20. There is no admission charge.
